In 1864 the P&I was reorganized as the Indianapolis, Peru & Chicago. The IP&C took over the Chicago, Cincinnati & Louisville between Peru and Michigan City in 1871, resulting in 161-mile line. In March 1887 the Indianapolis, Peru & Chicago was sold to the Lake Erie & Western, which later became part of the New York Central system. This car is very typical of the 1870s and 1880s, being a rolling advertisement for Cutler and Savidge Lumber Company. The lettering tells where the lumber company’s mills and lumberyards are located and what they sell. It is in dedicated service to the lumber company with instructions to return it to their Michigan City, IN yard when empty.
