His father was a piano maker, and William received training through his fathers business. William immigrated to the United States in 1852 and worked in the eastern U.S. at various piano manufacturing businesses. He moved to Milwaukee in 1878 to start a piano business of his own. His son, William R. Rohlfing, soon joined him after learning the trade from the family business in Germany. After William died in 1908, William R. continued running the business.
